If your panel has a floating, isolated, or filtered ground ... if you have UPS power ... if you are mixing 110 and 230 volts in your project, then this RS-232 isolation is ultra critical anyway. Your customer's (& competitor's) technicians may plug their note-book computers into the normal wallmounted mains supply. So besides the fool-proof access provided by the 232ih, it's isolation will prevent linking your panel ground to the mains ground through your delicate RS-232 port!

All three ports have 2.5kV optical isolation, plus 3 isolated DC supplies provides full 4-port galvanic isolation. The rdc232ih is fully solid-state for long life. The rdc232ih works with any 5-wire RS-232 devices isolating and switching Tx/Rx and providing floating signal ground for each RS-232.
